What will be coming in 2018?

A new day, a new year and a new adventure awaits.

As you probably saw from my Top Ten Games I'd Drop Everything For... list, I like to play the same games again and again. For me, nothing beats playing a game that you don't have to explain to your competition and you can just go head to head in the challenge to becoming the master of that game.

But there is also nothing like trying something new and different. To cleanse your pallet. And although I am not a fan of the "Cult Of The New," I find myself being wrapped up in it's web. This year, I will be working for game publishers on their newest games. Mainly Kickstarters. As always, I will be producing videos that show pertentual backers how the game works and feels.

Here are some of those titles:
So, not only am I making reviews of game, but with some of them I will be helping in the support as they are running on Kickstarter. As a campaign manager, which is kind of nice. Another bonus from this is I get to learn how these games work, not from reading a rule book. But from actually being taught by their designers. And that is a whole different sensation. You get inside their head and understand every facet and rule tweak that they have made over the many years that the game has been created. It's a wonderful feeling.

You can check out these titles in more depth on the BGG website:
Board Game Geek
And who knows what will be further down the road.

All I can tell you about the things that have happened in the past month. While I am getting older, I am finding it harder to retain information. I have even forgotten my birthday! Old man.

So instead of typing about all the wonderful things I seem to remember doing in December, I have recorded them into a little video for you.

  • In "A Review of Reviews" (1:59) I look back at the games I have put under the spot light and give you a sample overview of then.
  • "First and the Last" (7:01) is a first impressions segment on brand new game that I have played for the first time...and possibly their last!
  • "Question Time" (13:56) I go into depth about the games that are listed above.
  • "The Monthly Giveaway" (19:12) is a near-live prize draw that I do for my Patreons.
And that is just a fraction of the things that are coming in 2018. Unfortunately, I can not cover everything, but if I get a chance to, I will.

If you have a question that you'd like me to answer in next months video or advice about a game, please leave it in the comment section below. Until next time, play nicely together.
Ciao for now...

Hello Chaps and Chapettes,

I am sooooo sorry that I haven't been working as hard as I should have. Or maybe I HAVE been working hard...It's really hard to tell!

I have been absorbing many of my working and waking hours into playing "The 7th Continent." Now technically, it's work. But it's also play. I have poured another 20 hour or more, since my first review, into this well crafted universe. And I still can't unveil the wonderful secrets it has.

Because I can't beat it!

But I have made a second video review, manly of me blabbering and drawling with the love I have for the game. This time though, about how the game feels with another player. And with all the expansions locked in. (Although I haven't played one of the expansions (possible 3rd review) I will be trying them.)

With the Kickstarter nearing an end, this may be the last chance to get hold of a copy of the game. I am addicted. And I am telling you to GET THIS GAME????

Picture
Get this game (but only if you enjoy....)

a) "choose your own adventure" books,
b) sandbox computer games,
c) spending 100's hours playing ONE game
d) playing alone or co-op
e) spending stupid amounts of money
f) dying, loosing everything and having to reset to zero

Now I need to stop spitting this game in your face and move on with my life, because I'm sure that you are not subscribed the to 7th Continent Network..."This is Board Games Everybody Should..."

Does this game need an introduction?

Yes, it's the game everybody is talking about. It's the game that I can stop playing. And It's the game that I did the music for.

Why is it so good?
What is it about?
Where can you get a copy of it?

The 7th Continent Soundscape

As some of you may or may not know, I like music.
I add it into my videos...
I listen to it while playing games...
And it helps me sleep (but keeps my wife up)

I was so inspired by the board game company, Flying Frog Productions who add soundtrack CD's to all their game, that I produced my own soundtrack for their own game.

And it is this love of music and passion that helped me grab the chance to produce more music, this time directly asked to by a board game designer.
Bruno Sauter, the man behind the very successful Kickstarter "The 7th Continent" was on the look out for someone to create a soundtrack for his game. It was an added stretch goal to the project and something he personally wanted in the game.
A musician was hired to work on the project but after many months, had to leave. So the hunt was on to find a replacement. Kickstarters run on a ticking time-bomb, timescale. The project needs to be delivered to the backers on a specific time.

I had had the chance to play a prototype of the game and create a video, demonstrating how the game plays, so I had a little interaction with Bruno. I chatted with him at several festivals and conventions, inquiring how the production was going. At one of these event, he informed me of the loss of his composer. I interrupted him, saying that I knew of several people that could create a soundtrack...myself included. He said he will look into the names I had given.

A month or so had passed before a message came in..."Would you like to composes a soundtrack?"...To which I gleefully replied, "YES!"

So between the months of December 2016 and March 2017, I set to work creating soundscapes for the 10 area involved in the game. I expanded the requested time duration of each track from 5 minutes to 10-15 minutes, because I knew these tracks would be played on a loop. And I knew from experience (Bruno too), how annoying a small track, on a loop, can get irksome. Ideally, I would have preferred a 30 minute track for each zone, but due to that ticking time-bomb deadline, I made them as long as I could.

And now that the project is finished, I look back in contentment at the amount of work I produced, in the short amout of time. And I dream of the day when someone drops me a message, with the challenge..."Would you like to composes a soundtrack?"
